Nourhan Refaat Maayouf was born in 1990 in Cairo, Egypt, where she currently lives and works. She is a self-taught artist that specializes in digital photography, and video. She embarked on her artistic journey in 2010 by engaging with diverse forms of photography and finally focused on staged photography as a major and preferred style in her work. Maayouf relies on installations and performances in many of her photography projects. She prefers humble methods such as working with simple props and using natural lighting, when focusing on self-portraits—which continue to be the main focus of her work. In 2017, Maayouf started experimenting with video during her art residency in Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. Regardless of the medium and methodology, her methods are tied by two central interests: experiences within the home and the nature of relationships. Topics such as communication, self-deception, objectification and intimate and familial relationships were captured in her work. She is inspired primarily by her personal experiences as well as conversations on topics of interest, deserted places, literature, innovative forms of cinematography and everything surrounding her from empty jars to broken clocks.
